What's This Button Do? Communicating Web 2.0 Through Design is a recording of the live presentation given by Robert Hoekman, Jr. at the Flashforward 2007 conference in Boston . Please note that since this presentation was recorded live, the audio and video quality may vary from our regular course offerings.

Session Description: The rise of Web 2.0 has brought with it a slew of new interaction styles and concepts, many of which give the web magical powers it never had before. But RSS, tagging, slide transitions, and many other new paradigms are unfamiliar to most web audiences. Helping users take advantage of them is essential to a superior user experience. So how do we teach our audience to use all these fancy new gadgets?

Robert Hoekman, Jr., will talk about how to communicate the purpose, benefit, and usage of these new features. He'll also discuss how to effectively use text, screenshots, screencasts, and other elements to make web applications easy to learn. He'll show you when and where to use instructive elements, how to take advantage of screenshot and screen-recording software, how to write instructions in ten words or less, and how to keep your users feeling productive from the very beginning.
